6.9k - gen - garak/bashir, tekeny ghemor & kira - teen and up audiences - references to violent revolution - read on ao3
epistolary fic documenting a civilian uprising to overthrow the cardassian government, sparked by a book garak writes and publishes anonymously
the man, the myth, the legend. however you slice it, tell stories is still my most popular fic, and i'm pretty happy to have it that way - it is probably the best thing i've written on this ao3. incorporating my cardassian!kira headcanon and fleshing out her relationship with tekeny was such a joy, and i do think it adds so much to the flavour of the narrative - a lot of ds9 political fic about cardassia focuses exclusively on garak, and while that's an important perspective, i do think there's a missed opportunity to look at how someone less cynical and more idealistic views cardassia
as i mention in the notes of the fic itself, the concept came to me whilst sweeping the leaves off my street. it's a dull, repetetive task i get up to a couple times each autumn/winter, and the endless monotony of it always sparks some interesting thoughts. in this case, the whole phrase 'leaving bajor: one cardassian perspective on post-occupation patriotism' jumped into my head about two slabs of concrete in. i then spent the next couple of hours sweeping time planning out the whole thing in my head. by the time i came in, with blisters all over my hands, i knew how the entire fic was going to go, start to finish. it's pretty rare for me to have an idea jump into my head quite so fully-formed as that, so it's still something really special to me, especially because the finished fic came out pretty much perfectly how i envisioned it
practical studies in kardasi poetry
1k - m/m - garak/bashir - teen and up audiences - no warnings - read on ao3
epistolary fic of bashir writing a somewhat sexually charged cardassian-style poem for garak
ach, this fic. i don't... hate it. the poem is good, imo. but the fic itself definitely falls flat, especially after all this time. the fic was written pretty quickly whilst my mind was really on tell stories of freedom, and i think it shows - a lot of the dialogue in particular stands out to me as kind of subpar. i've long toyed with the idea of going back and editing this because i'm really not thrilled with it, but i'll see if i ever get the inspiration to do a large-scale edit/update

2.3k words - gen - garak/bashir - general audiences - no warnings - read on ao3
epistolary fic of two cardassian poems, with garak and bashir responding to and commenting on them, inspired by another fic with the same format
looking back at this fic now is kind of strange. the first thing i posted under this name! i still love this fic a lot - the poems were so much fun to write, and i loved sneaking in little references to the inspiring fic as well as personal headcanons, particularly about the flora of vulcan. i'm really, really proud of this fic - both garak and bashir feel super in-character for me, and i think despite the somewhat strange format it does all come together really well. and, imo, the poems aren't too bad xD
