this is an all-in-one guide to all my writing posted over on my ao3, plus some extra thoughts, ramblings and notes. nothing here is spoiler-free for my fic or canon sources

there are a few written works that have been absolutely key to my development as a writer. in no particular order:
- seamus heaney's translation of beowulf totally revolutionised my understanding of and appreciation for lavish descriptions of environments, and how to turn purple prose into a compelling narrative device. the poetry is direct, immediate and self-indulgently beautiful
- danny denton's all along the echo forms the heart of my love affair with epistolary works and timebending/nonlinear narratives. it's a mundane and haunting look at the legacies of covid-19 and the troubles
- ian mcdonald's luna: new moon is a masterclass in dystopian scifi worldbuilding, and is the beating heart behind everything i write on politics in star trek
- becky chambers' a psalm for the wild-built and its sequel a prayer for the crown-shy are the novels i look to as the absolute core of what it means to write hopeful fiction. ultimately, i am an incurable optimist, and i hope that my writing reflects that
if it's on my ao3, it was probably beta'd by the incredible bee (aka splendide-mendax) and/or the lovely S (aka brucewaynery), both of whom write fantastic stuff of their own and who i appreciate immeasurably <3
i've been writing fanfic for over ten years, and dabbled in a fair few fandoms. right now i'm interested in the star wars prequels and hannibal, but i move about a fair amount! a good chunk of my posted fic at the moment is for deep space nine, and i still really love it. plus, my meta tends to go all over the place - from star wars to merlin to james bond!
recently i've only been writing oneshots (though these do inevitably end up longer than i mean for them to be!). i have written longfic in the past, but these days i prefer the self-contained nature of a short(er) fic and the space it gives me to explore a single theme in a good amount of depth.
favourite fic tropes and themes:
- fix-it
- doomed by the narrative
- politics
- languages, linguistics and translation
favourite meta topics:
- queerness and gender
- culture
- storytelling structure
i generally welcome translations, podfics and remixes of my work - please just ask first by dropping a note in the comments of the relevant work!
